Applications are now open for the summer and autumn voluntary placements of the Fisheries Observation Programme. This hands-on placement is a great opportunity for early-career researchers and conservationists looking to gain practical experience in fisheries research, marine conservation, and field-based data collection. Participants will work closely with SPOT staff to collect data on fisheries, assist with responses to marine turtle strandings, and contribute to the protection of sensitive marine habitats in the northern part of Cyprus.

Main Responsibilities

  • Observe fishing operations onboard small-scale fishing vessels
  • Be on-call and assist with responses to stranded turtles
  • Monitor illegal activities across the No-Take Zones through foot patrols
  • Help with data entry, field station upkeep, and ongoing research

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • Full, clean driving license held for at least 2 years (Manual (Category: B) desirable)
  • Graduate degree in a relevant subject
  • Competent use of English language
  • Ability to commit fully for the full duration of selected placement

Placement Periods (3 months)

  • Summer: June to August*
  • Autumn: September to November
    *One place available for immediate start

Funding

  • Accommodation and food fully covered by the programme
  • Travel support of up to €300

The Fisheries Observation Programme has been run by SPOT for multiple years, and this year is receiving additional support from the SPOTlight on Fisheries project, which is funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented by SPOT and Enalia Physis.
